Age defying properties

Rosehip Seed Oil is one of the few oils that contain naturally occurring vitamin A; which appears to delays the signs of ageing.

Paw Paw Ointment

Paw Paw Ointment

Made from fermented paw paw (carica papaya L), the medicinal properties of paw paw ointment have been known for years, but science is now in a position to explain why this tropical fruit is so rich in healing qualities.

Papaya (paw paw) is rich in an enzyme called papain. This enzyme has softening and disintegrating qualities that are ideal for the treatment of:

§ warts,

§ corns,

§ eczema,

§ rashes (eg heat and nappy),

§ insect bites and

§ mild psoriasis.

It has also been known to reduce inflammation and treat ringworm.

Papain enzymes in paw paw breaks down protein toxins (disintegration) which make it a good emergency home remedy treatment for jellyfish, bee and wasps stings. Papain is often synthesised and used as an active ingredient in insect repellents and insect bite soothers such as Stop Itch.

Natural Sun Care

Natural Sun Care

Natural sunscreens should reduce the harmful effects of the sun without damaging our skin with chemicals.

There are two types of ultra violet rays we need to be careful of. The first is UVB, which is causes sunburn, the other UVA which contributes to longer term damage such as premature aging. Both ultra violet rays have the potential to cause skin cancer.

There are also two types of sunscreens, those that filter the sun, and those that absorb ultraviolet rays. Sunscreens that filter are better able to protect against both UVA and UVB rays. Whereas sunscreens that absorb usually only absorb UVB rays and parts of the UVA spectrum.

Sun blockers contain the natural ingredient zinc oxide that filters out both UVA & UVB rays.

The sun is both a blessing and a curse. We need the sun to metabolise Vitamin D, but too much sun can permanently damage and age our skin. Chemical based sunscreens run the risk of interfering with the natural process of vitamin D metabolism.

After Sun Care

Caring for our skin is hard work, especially in summer, yet it is essential if we are to protect ourselves and our families from the sun's rays.

Following a good sun sense regime doesn’t stop with a sunscreen. Sunscreens don’t filter out all of the suns rays. In fact even the highest rating (30+) sunscreens are able to filter around 95% of UVA and UVB rays.

After a day in the sun it’s a good idea to shower and apply an all over moisturiser to replenish the skins oils from the outside.

Aloe Vera moisturisers such provide great cooling relief, if you do happen to get a little sun burnt, or to add a little more moisture back into your skin after the sun.

Mineral Make up and the Sun

Natural Mineral Make up has it's own sunscreen! Zinc Oxide is a natural sun filter, and a very effective one at that. Therefore whenever you use your mineral make-up, that area is protected by a one of the best mineral sunscreens around.

Natural Organic Dandruff Treatment

Natural Organic Dandruff Treatment

Dandruff is a mysterious condition as it has no specific cause or cure. However, its symptoms are treatable. Treatment can be as simple as changing shampoo, using lotions, home-made products, or changing your diet.

Although dandruff does not generally threaten your health, it is annoying and can be quite embarrassing. Persistent scratching can cause bleeding and greater susceptibility to infection. There are many natural (and unnatural) remedies for relieving the symptoms of dandruff, but as yet, no known cure.

Dandruff results from the normal growing processes of the scalp. The skin on our scalp roughly sheds every 24 days. Dandruff occurs when skin cells shed at an excessive rate, causing flakes of skin to appear in the hair and on the shoulders. Other potential causes of dandruff include: fungal infection, food allergies, petrochemical and sulphate based shampoos, yeast infections; stress or it may just be hereditary.

Traditional remedies general focus on the use of external shampoos or ointments; many of which contain petrochemicals and coal tar. This is quite an extreme treatment given we’re only talking about excessive skin cell production!

As consumers, we have a choice, we can either combat the symptoms with harsh chemical remedies, or we can attempt a more natural and holistic method. The purpose of which is to gradually build up our own skin defences to restore the correct pH balance to our scalp, through diet, gentle cleansing and addressing stress.

Chemically-based products are not the answer to dandruff; in fact, they can be part of the problem. There is a strong link between dandruff and sodium lauryl sulfate, a substance found in most commercially available shampoos. Eliminating this chemical from your hair care routine may be all you need to control the problem.

So before we start hitting the hard stuff, why not use a natural shampoo and conditioner, coupled with a citrus blend rinse to up the pH level in the scalp. You could make your own anti-dandruff shampoo with a blend of lavender water and rosehip oil (egg white makes a good emulsifier), followed by apple cider and lemon rinse.

Natural Mineral Make up

Natural Mineral Make up

There are so many benefits to using Natural Mineral make up, that its no surprise it's one of the largest growing industries. With modern light technologies ensuring a seemingly endless range of colours and hues.

Natural Mineral makeup is naturally good for our skin; it is naturally enriched with anti-inflammatory, anti-microbial, non-comedogenic and sun protection properties. In fact it is the only make up that has been recommended for use after face procedures such as chemical peels or laser re-surfacing.

Sufferers of acne, rosecea and scaring may use mineral makeups safely and relax in the knowledge that it will not worsen your condition.

However ... there is always an however. We need to be vigilant when looking to purchase natural mineral make up. Because all natural mineral cosmetics were not created equally.

A good natural mineral make up is made up primarily of 4 key ingredients: Mica, Titanium dioxide, zinc oxide and iron oxides. Many natural mineral makeup’s include bismuth oxycholoride as a base ingredient. I do not recommend the use of bismuth oxycholoride. Other ingredients to watch for include talc, parabens and petrochemicals such as propylene glycol.

Moisturising Naturally

Moisturising Naturally

Moisturising which nourishes, firms and minimises dull looking skin and lines - takes on a new importance once the skin's functions are understood.

Many of us tend to let skin be until dryness, oiliness, a rash, or a wrinkle, draws their attention. As our body's largest organ, skin plays an important role and is often taken for granted. Our skin regulates temperature by producing sweat to cool us down, while blood vessels also open up to diffuse heat when we are overheated.

Skin is the protective shield between us and the outside world. It serves as a water repellent and protects us from the environment, particularly the sun. The skin has tactile sensations - it is sensitive to touch, pressure, vibration and tickling - and thermal sensation - responding to heat and coolness.

Skin also excretes salt and water, absorbs substances (such as nutrients) and produces Vitamin D from sunlight. Epidermis, the topmost layer of the skin, itself contains many layers. The surface layer is made up of dead skin cells (keratinocytes - cells that make the protein keratin). Between these cells are lipids that create a water-repellent barrier. These form the protective crust of the skin.

Oil glands are attached to the skin's hair follicles, and secrete sebum, which lubricates and waterproofs the skin and hair. A natural moisturiser, sebum also prevents excessive evaporation of water from the skin. If too little sebum is produced, this can lead to excessive dryness and wrinkling, while conversely, over-production of sebum can lead to acne.

A moisturiser should not interrupt with the normal processes of the skin, but rather complement them. This is why moisturisers made of natural ingredients are better as they act in harmony with the dynamic nature of the skin, rather than drenching it in chemicals.

Managing Acne Naturally

Managing Acne Naturally

Acne can be a distressing ailment. It can completely ruin a date or job interview through its affect on our sense of self. Acne is hard to hide because its usual position is prominently on our face. We can find some comfort in knowing that it is the most common skin condition on earth.

Acne usually occurs when our sebaceous glands become inflamed and are infected with a bacterium: (propionibacterium acne). The sebaceous gland secretes our natural moisturiser; sebum. It coats the hair surface, prevents excessive evaporation of water and keeps the skin soft.

The bacterium that causes acne is which is present in everyone’s skin, usually lodged in the hair follicle. With acne, sebum clogs the follicle and it becomes a breeding ground for the bacteria. Whilst antibiotics can kill some of the bacteria, the environment in which it grows is still there. By creating an environment where acne is unwelcome, we have good chance of beating the dreaded zit once and for all. But we need to keep on top of it with a good face care regime.

During our teenage years, acne is more common, because hormones stimulate the sebaceous glands to product sebum; opening us up to more opportunities for the bacteria to infect our glands.

Naturally Safe Cosmetics recommend a number of gentle products that can help with acne. They are not a cure; rather they help by creating an environment that allows the body to heal itself.

When buying skincare products, take a look at its ingredients. If there are more chemical ingredients than there are natural ingredients, try another product: you may be surprised.

Naturally Safe Cosmetics products do not contain petrochemicals that can increase the production of sebum. They do not contain parabens or sulfates that increase irritation levels to your skin. Rather, they contain gentle ingredients, like olive oil, aloe vera, or coconut oil that effectively clean your skin and allow the natural healing process to take place.

History of Cosmetics

Looks that could kill!

There is an old saying that beauty can be dangerous, but until recently very few of us realised that the products we use to enhance our beauty may not be as safe as we thought.

Throughout history women have unknowingly used dangerous chemicals such as mercury, lead, arsenic and formaldehyde, as beauty products.

Cleopatra recognised for her bold and striking make up, applied malachite, lead sulphide, soot, antimony, manganese and copper to her eyes. No wonder the Egyptians had such wonderful imaginations with all those neurological damaging ingredients!

During the Renaissance many women, including Queen Elizabeth the 1st used deadly white lead to whiten their face. This directly contributed too many deaths and disfigurements. In fact Queen Elizabeth, herself was so disfigured that she refused to look in the mirror … and disguised her disfigurement with more white lead!

Women of the Victorian times, had somewhat wised up to the use of dangerous leads in face powder, replacing them with zinc oxide. However their knowledge still wasn’t complete, as lead, antimony sulphide, belladonna and nightshade were used to highlight eyes and Mercury and arsenic used in lipstick.

Less then 80 years ago in 1933, Lash Lure mascara was introduced to the market place. Marketed as permanent mascara, it contained p-phenylenediamine an untested chemical that caused blistering and ulceration of the eye, which often lead to blindness, and in one case death.

We may cringe or laugh at lengths women went in the name of beauty. But all of these substances were effective in achieving the superficial look that the women of the day sought. Lead did whiten their face, mercury did colour their lips red and nightshade did give them shimmering eyes.

Although mercury, lead, arsenic and formaldehyde may still be present in modern main stream cosmetics, they are normally only contain a very small proportion of these ingredients. Instead the modern cosmetics industry relies on a wide range of other chemicals such as sodium lauryl sulphate, parabens, petrochemicals, artificial colours and preservatives.

These ingredients are very appealing to cosmetics manufacturers as they are cheap and effective at what they do. Some of these chemicals were developed for industrial use; propylene glycol adds body and a smooth texture to products such as shampoo, but began life as industrial antifreeze; sodium lauryl sulphate is a foaming agent that started out as, and is still used as an engine degreaser.

But how dangerous are these chemicals and what is the threat when they are in cosmetics?

Well there has been research linking many of these chemicals to cancer, skin aliments, allergies, and a host of other disorders. Cosmetics and chemical companies have countered this research with their own research stating that the ingredients are safe.

As with similar scientific debate, such as smoking and asbestos, in may take many more years of impartial research to know for sure what many of these new and exotic chemicals are doing to our health.

Cosmetics are always in contact with our skin. And therefore they can be absorbed through the skin and get into our blood system, where they can be transported all around the body. Some cosmetics ingredients are not easily eliminated from our body and can build up to harmful levels. Long term exposure to chemicals may be one of the causes of multiple chemical sensitivity, cancer, dermatitis and other minor, but annoying allergies. So the foundation or eye shadows that are applied daily could be more permanent than we think.

Is there an alternative?

Fortunately there is a wide range of natural, herbal, and organic cosmetic that offer a great alternative to suspect chemicals. Let’s face it, who wouldn’t want to use a product made with rosehip oil instead of an industrial degreaser, or organic lavender oil instead of the 26 cheaper chemicals it takes to reproduce lavender’s fragrance!

So what should you look for and what should you avoid when shopping for natural, herbal and organic cosmetic and personal care products?

Read the ingredients list on the back of the package. By law the ingredients should be listed in order of the proportion in the product, so the first 4 or 5 in the list normally make up more that 80% of the product. So firstly look for natural products that you recognise in the list, such as almond, rosehip and aloe vera oil. Next make sure these are early in the list of ingredients as this means there is a high proportion of these ingredients in the products. Then avoid products that have lots of long chemical sounding names in the ingredients list, especially if these are the first 5 or so ingredients.

Remember if you think that a product may be causing irritation stop using it a try something else.

Benefits of Organic Rosehip Oil

Benefits of Organic Rosehip Oil

Rosehip Oil is renowned for its healing properties. It has been used for centuries by Egyptians and other ancient civilisations to maintain a youthful look. This is due to the high levels essential fatty acids that are found in Rosehip Oil.

Rosehip Seed Oil comes from the "hip" or "fruit" of the rose, produced through cold pressing. It is rich in Vitamin A, Essential Fatty Acids Vitamin C; which help to regenerate skin cells. Organic Rosehip is a very light oil so it absorbs quickly into the skin without leaving a residue.

Organic Rosehip oil has been shown to benefit people who suffer from skin conditions such as:

· Dermatitis;

· Acne;

· Eczema;

· Scars

· Stretchmarks

· Pigmentation

· Sunburn; and

· Brittle nails.

Australian Rosehip Oil is gaining popularity as Australia has such great conditions for growing organic roses. Rosehip Oil is normally harvested at the end/beginning of season to get the ripest and most potent oil. This oil is then blended and prepared to produce a range of products including oils, lotions, creams, cosmetics, and other skincare products.

As Rosehip Oil is a natural product on its own does not last long, so Vitamin C is added to the oil for a longer life. Of course Vitamin C has its own fantastic benefits on the skin.

Not only is Rosehip Oil good for the skin, but it’s also good for hair. Sufferers of dandruff or other scalp conditions have commented widely on how their dandruff has been eased through massaging rosehip oil in the scalp.

New born babies don’t need harsh cleansers to clean their little bodies. A couple of drops of rosehip oil in baby’s bath will clean and refresh your baby without chemical cleansers. In a cream form, it is also good for nappy rash.

Aloe Vera Skin Care

Aloe Vera Skincare

What is Aloe Vera?

Aloe Vera is a succulent plant that originated in the arid areas of North Africa and the Middle East. It is one of several hundred Aloe plants that are natives to many of the arid regions of the world, except Australia.

The beneficial part of the Aloe Vera plant is the sap, more commonly known as Aloe Vera Gel. This is a clear jelly like substance found in the leaves of the Aloe Vera plant.

Benefits of Aloe Vera

For thousands of years the healing benefits of aloe vera has been known by the people of North Africa and the Middle East. Aloe Vera Gel was used by traditional medicine practitioners to treat sun burn, serious burns, cuts, wounds, infections, dry skin, and many other skin problems. Drinking Aloe Vera Gel also was used to treat all types of mouth, gum and dental problems, improving digestion, and general infections.

Aloe Vera Skincare

Aloe Vera greatly improves the effectiveness of natural organic skincare products such as moisturisers and cleansers, as Aloe Vera Gel helps the body heal any minor skin damage for the sun, the ravages of time and our stressful modern life.

Some of the common uses of Aloe Vera in skincare include

  • Treating minor burns, rashers, abrasions and other wounds;
  • Moisturising and rehydrating dry, cracked and damaged skin;
  • Improving the texture and complexion of skin;
  • Smoothing of wrinkles and stretch marks;
  • Treating acne and other minor skin disorders; and
  • As a hair wash to reduce dandruff and other scalp problems

Aloe Vera Products

Over the past 20 years the Aloe Vera market has expanded greatly. Originally only available through health food stores and naturopaths, Aloe Vera products are now available across an array of outlets including pharmacies and supermarkets.

Although this growing awareness of Aloe Vera’s healing properties has greatly increased the number of Aloe Vera products available, not all of these new products are as good as they seem. Some contain such small amounts of Aloe Vera Gel that it has little or no therapeutic value. Others use clever marketing tricks such as using the word Aloe as part of their brand name, despite having no Aloe Vera in the product.

How do you tell a good Aloe Vera product?

This can be difficult, but some things you can do are:

  • Read the product label and ingredients section.
  • All products must now list ingredients using Latin name. The Latin for Aloe Vera is Aloe Barbadensis.
  • If Aloe barbadensis leaf gel, extract or juice is the first or second product on the ingredients list that means that there is a higher percentage of Aloe Vera in the product.
  • Avoid products where Aloe Vera is not mentioned until much later in the ingredients list. This means the product has little Aloe Vera in it.
  • Look for products that are Certified Organic
